601 D Street, Spanish Mediterranean Cottage
Built in 1936
This brick residence with a double cross gable roof and modified U-plan was designed in the Spanish/Mediterranean style. The front facing U-plan creates a central patio area at the entrance which extends across the south side of the front facade. A low brick wall encloses the patio along the south side of the front facade, suggesting the enclosed courtyard of its Spanish model. The low gabled roof is [was wood] shingle with closely cropped eaves. The ridge is pierced by a simple low brick chimney. Fenestration consists of a large floor length arched window on the projecting north wing gable wall, a Palladian window in the same location on the projecting south wing and a large rectangular window between the two wings. All the fenestration is multi-light casement set into the wall and framed by a decorative brick casing and sill. Terra cotta pipes are used as decorative vents at the apex of the gable ends. The house retains its integrity of design, workmanship, material, setting and association and is an excellent example of its type.
